A punctured bicycle inner tube can be repaired by cleaning, sanding, applying adhesive, patching, and allowing it to cure. The entire process requires careful operation to ensure a seal. This method is suitable for repairing small holes or cracks.
1. Prepare Tools and Materials
You will need the following basic tools:
Tire patching kit (including patch pads, glue, and a file)
Tire pry bar
Hand pump or air pump
Basin or soapy water (for checking for leaks)
It is recommended to choose reliable tire patch pads and specialized tire patch glue to avoid using inferior products that may cause repeated leaks.
2. Remove the Inner Tube and Locate the Burst
Remove the bicycle wheelset. Carefully pry open the outer tire with a tire pry bar and remove the inner tube. After inflating the inner tube, accurately locate the puncture point by listening, touching, or using the water test method (immersing the inner tube in water and observing bubbles), and mark it.
3. Clean and sand the surface. Use a file or sandpaper to sand the area around the puncture to remove the rubber oxide layer and increase roughness, making it easier for the glue to adhere. The sanding area should be slightly larger than the patch size; be careful not to over-sand to avoid damaging the inner tube structure.
4. Apply glue and wait for it to dry. Apply a thin, even layer of glue to the sanded area and let it sit for about 1–2 minutes until the surface is slightly dry and viscous before proceeding to the next step. If using a double-coat method, a second coat can be applied to enhance adhesion.
